What Is the Minimum Order for Modal Underwear?
Renrui makes private label modal underwear from 100 pieces per colour, with sizes split freely inside that quantity. Most modal boxer brief specs we are asked for use a 92/8 micromodal or 91/9 modal jersey at around 180 gsm. Samples take 7–10 days, bulk takes 25–35 days after sample approval, and reorders ship in 10–15 days.
Fabric is pre-shrunk to within 3% before cutting, and quotes go out within 8–12 hours of a complete inquiry.
This page covers modal-specific production. For our full underwear range, styles and construction, see our custom underwear manufacturer page.
Which Modal Fabric Should You Use for Underwear?
Modal, micromodal, lyocell and bamboo viscose are all regenerated cellulose fibres, and on a quote they can look interchangeable. On the cutting table they’re not. Fineness, hand feel, weight and the finishing each one needs before cutting are all different.
| Cotton jersey | Modal | MicroModal | Lyocell | Viscose from bamboo | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fibre | Cotton | Wood pulp, high wet modulus rayon | Same as modal, finer fibre | Wood pulp, solvent-spun | Bamboo pulp, viscose process |
| Hand feel | Matte, firmer | Smooth, cool, drapey | Softest, silky | Smooth, slightly crisper than modal | Very soft, heavier drape |
| Common underwear weight | 160–200 gsm | 170–200 gsm | 150–180 gsm | 170–200 gsm | 170–210 gsm |
| Fibre fineness | — | 1.3 dtex | 1.0 dtex | — | — |
| Moisture regain | 7–8.5% | 11–13% | 11–13% | — | — |
| Needs pre-shrinking before cutting | Yes | Yes — see data below | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| We produce it | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Best for | Everyday basics, lowest cost | Premium everyday boxer briefs | Luxury, second-skin lines | Sustainability-led brands | Soft-touch lines with clear labelling |

Can You Make Pouch Boxer Briefs in Modal?
Yes. It is one of the things modal buyers ask us about most. Modal drapes instead of bunching, which is exactly what a pouch wants. We build three.
| Construction | How it is made | What it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Contour front | Two shaped front panels joined with a centre seam | Everyday boxer briefs, the most forgiving fit |
| 3D pouch | A separate pouch panel set into the front, with a shaping seam underneath | Brands selling support and a lifted fit |
| Separated U-pouch | An internal U-shaped hammock that separates from the legs | Premium and sport lines |
The catch: modal is light and slippery, and if you cut and sew it like cotton, the pouch seams pucker. We cut pouch panels in low ply heights, sew the pouch with a stretch stitch at a shorter stitch length, and line 3D and U-pouches with self fabric so they keep their shape after washing.
More panels means more sewing time: a separated U-pouch usually adds 10–20% to the unit price over a contour front.
Which Styles, Sizes and Stitching Can You Choose?
This is the spec sheet for a modal underwear order. Everything below is standard for us — pick what you want and it goes into the same quote.
| Option | What we make | Effect on price or time |
|---|---|---|
| Men’s styles | Briefs, trunks, boxer briefs, long-leg boxer briefs, loose boxers | Long legs use more fabric, so they cost a little more |
| Leg length (inseam) | Trunk about 3″ (7–8 cm) · boxer brief 5–6″ (13–15 cm) · long leg 8–9″ (20–23 cm), or your own length | No extra cost; set on the pattern |
| Front | No fly, mock fly, functional fly, contour or pouch front | A functional fly or pouch adds sewing time (see the pouch section above) |
| Sizes | Men’s XS–3XL as standard, 4XL–5XL graded on request · women’s XS–XXL · your own size chart if you have one | Extended sizes need their own grading; no extra minimum |
| Waistband width | 2.5, 3, 3.5 or 4 cm; exposed elastic or fabric-covered | Wider and jacquard bands cost more |
| Seams | Four-thread overlock as standard · flatlock seams on request · twin-needle coverstitch hems at the legs | Flatlock lies flatter against the skin and adds roughly 5–10% to sewing cost |
| Leg opening | Covered elastic, coverstitched hem, or soft fold-over band | No extra cost |
| Logo and print | Heat-transfer or screen-printed logo, printed tagless neck label, embroidery on boxers, all-over prints digitally printed on the fabric | All-over prints are quoted per design and add about a week |
If you would rather not decide, copy the spec most first orders arrive on: a 5–6″ boxer brief in 92/8 micromodal, no fly, a 3.5 cm exposed waistband with a heat-transfer logo, sizes S–XXL. It sells, and it is cheap to reorder — which is the whole point of a first drop.
What Blend Ratio Works for Boxer Briefs?
Most modal underwear isn’t 100% modal. The elastane is what pulls it back into shape after it’s stretched, and a couple of points either way changes the feel more than most people expect.
| Blend | Stretch & recovery | What it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 95/5 modal/elastane | Soft, relaxed recovery | Briefs, loose-leg trunks, sleep boxers |
| 92/8 modal/elastane | Firmer hold — the ratio we are asked for most | Boxer briefs that need to stay in place |
| 91/9 – 90/10 | Close fit, compressive feel | Long-leg (5–7 inch) boxer briefs, sport styles |
Brands that ask us for modal underwear most often specify 92/8 micromodal or 91/9 modal at around 180 gsm. Go past about 10% elastane and it stops feeling like modal and starts feeling like gym kit.
Do You Make Women's Modal Underwear?
Yes. They run on the same lines as the boxer briefs, on the same pre-shrunk, wash-tested fabric, at the same 100 pieces per colour.
- Styles: briefs, bikinis, hipsters and high-waist briefs, in full or moderate coverage.
- Edges: picot elastic, covered elastic or raw-edge finishing.
- Gusset: lined to your spec; a 100% cotton gusset lining is the most common request.
- Lace: lace trim or lace waistbands where the design calls for it.
A typical women’s spec we are asked to quote: 92/8 modal/elastane at about 180 gsm, mid or high rise, cotton gusset, woven main label and care label, three colours, sizes XS–XXL. If you only have a reference garment, our pattern room can draft the block from it.
How Much Does Modal Underwear Shrink?
Modal is a high wet modulus rayon. It holds its shape better than ordinary viscose, but an untreated modal knit still shrinks badly in its first wash. How badly comes down to one thing: how the fabric was finished before anyone cut it.
| Modal fabric condition | Length change after one wash | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 100% modal 1×1 rib, dry-relaxed only (not pre-shrunk) | −16.5% (micromodal) to −18.8% (modal) | Tomljenović & Živičnjak, Nanomaterials (2025), EN ISO 6330 at 40 °C |
| The same fabric after wet relaxation | about −8% | Same study |
| Common buyer tolerance for knit underwear | within ±5% | AATCC 135 buyer specifications |
| Renrui fabric before cutting | pre-shrunk to within 3% | Our production standard |
So the same modal yarn can lose almost a fifth of its length or almost nothing, depending on whether the fabric was relaxed and compacted before cutting. That’s why a “modal” spec on its own tells you very little, and why we test every production roll.
Here’s what we actually do on every modal order: a swatch is cut from the actual roll your order will be cut from, washed and dried on a repeated domestic cycle following ISO 6330, and dimensional change is read the AATCC 135 way. You get the length and width figures before we cut your bulk. If the roll drifts from what your approved sample did, we change the roll, not your spec.
Figures from published studies are for reference and vary with knit structure, weight and finishing. Your order’s own results are sent to you before bulk.
Will Modal Underwear Pill or Wear Thin?
This is the next thing buyers ask about after shrinkage, and they are right to ask. Modal is a fine, smooth fibre. Where fabric rubs on fabric — the inner thigh, the seat — loose fibre ends work up into pills. Hot tumble drying makes it far worse.
Four things decide how long a modal boxer brief lasts.
- Yarn and weight. Compact-spun micromodal at the heavier end of its range, 170 gsm and up, holds up far better than open, light jersey under 150 gsm. If a quote looks cheap, check the fabric weight first.
- The gusset. We sew a double-layer gusset on briefs and boxer briefs as standard, so the area that wears through first has two layers.
- Pilling test on request. We can have your fabric tested to ISO 12945-2 (Martindale). A well-made micromodal jersey typically rates grade 3–4 on the 1–5 scale after 2,000 rubs. Below grade 3 we would not recommend it for underwear.
- The care label. We print “machine wash cold, tumble dry low or hang dry” by default, because most of the pilling customers complain about starts in the dryer.
How Can You Brand the Waistband?
For a first run of 100–300 pieces per colour, most brands start with stock elastic and a printed or woven logo, then move to a custom jacquard waistband once reorders justify the elastic minimum.
| Waistband option | Typical minimum | Added lead time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock brushed elastic + heat-transfer logo | No extra minimum | None | Lowest |
| Stock elastic + woven label at the back | Woven labels from about 500 pcs | 3–5 days | Low |
| Logo printed on plain elastic | About 500 m of elastic | About 7 days | Medium |
| Custom jacquard elastic with your logo | About 1,000 m per design and colour (roughly 1,000 pairs) | 10–15 days | Highest |
Whichever you choose, the waistband is joined with a four-thread overlock and bar-tacked at the side seams, so it doesn’t split at the join after the first wash. Elastic minimums are set by the elastic mill; we confirm the exact figure for your design when we quote.
Packaging: Poly Bags, 3-Pack Boxes and Gift Boxes
Custom packaging starts at 100 per design, same as the garments. So yes, a first drop of 100 boxer briefs can go out in your own branded box. We print it while your bulk is being sewn and pack it on the same line, and the cartons leave here retail-ready.
| Packaging | Minimum | What it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Plain clear poly bag, folded with a size sticker | No extra minimum | Wholesale, subscription and DTC orders shipped in mailers |
| Printed poly bag or mailer with your logo | 100 pcs per design | DTC brands that ship single pairs |
| Printed hang tag or belly band (paper sleeve) | 100 pcs per design | Retail and boutique stockists |
| Printed 3-pack box | 100 boxes per design | Multipack and subscription brands |
| Rigid or magnetic gift box | 100 boxes per design | Premium lines and gift sets |
Send your dieline and artwork, or tell us the size and finish you want and we set up the dieline for you. We send a photo of the packed sample before bulk, so you see the folded garment in the box, and the barcode or SKU stickers you send us go on every unit before cartoning.
How to Choose a Modal Underwear Manufacturer
Five questions, all specific to modal. You can ask every one of them in a single email — of us, or of anyone else you are quoting.
1. Ask what “modal” means on the quote. It can mean branded fibre (such as Lenzing™ Modal) or generic modal. Generic modal is what most private-label programmes use. What matters is that the quote says which, and that you get the blend ratio and fabric weight in writing.
2. Ask for wash results on the actual roll. Modal and micromodal behave well in a showroom sample and then shrink in a customer’s dryer when the fabric was never pre-shrunk. A factory that can’t show you a number hasn’t tested.
3. Check the waistband, not only the body fabric. Most modal underwear complaints are about a waistband that relaxes after a month, not the modal itself. Ask how the elastic is attached and what its recovery is after washing.
4. Ask how they cut a light, slippery fabric. Micromodal moves on the cutting table. Ask whether they cut it in lower ply heights or under weights. Uneven cutting shows up later as twisted side seams.
5. Ask what the minimum is per colour, and whether that colour is dyed for you. Modal is dyed in fabric lots, and some low minimums only work because the factory is cutting stock fabric in whatever colours already exist. Ask which it is. With us, the 100 pieces per colour are dyed to your Pantone reference, not picked from a stock colour card.
Labelling and Trademark Rules for Modal and Bamboo Underwear
- TENCEL™ and LENZING™ are Lenzing AG trademarks. Using fabric made from the fibre doesn’t by itself let you print the name on your hangtag or packaging; brands apply through Lenzing’s licensing programme. The lyocell we stock is generic lyocell, so it is labelled “lyocell” on care labels and product copy, not TENCEL™.
- Bamboo has to be labelled as rayon or viscose in the US. Under FTC rules, underwear made from bamboo-based viscose must be described as “rayon made from bamboo” or “viscose from bamboo”, not as “bamboo fabric”. We label it that way on care labels by default. The same rules apply to our bamboo sleepwear.
- Fibre content goes on the care label by percentage, for example “92% Modal, 8% Spandex”, with country of origin “Made in China”.
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: our modal, micromodal, lyocell and bamboo-viscose fabrics are certified, and certificate copies travel with every shipment.
What Modal Underwear Buyers Usually Send Us
A few real specs from recent inquiries (brand names left out):
- Men’s boxer briefs, 91/9 modal at 180 gsm, quoted at 300, 500, 1,000 and 1,500 pieces
- 5-inch boxer briefs in 92/8 micromodal, 300 pieces, with retail packaging
- Men’s boxers in modal or lyocell, 300–400 pieces, three-packs in a magnetic gift box
- Cotton/modal/spandex boxer briefs at 190 gsm with a jacquard waistband
If your spec looks like one of these, include the fabric ratio, weight, waistband type and quantity per colour in your inquiry, and we can quote without a back-and-forth.

What the 100-piece minimum does and doesn’t cover:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| New pattern or existing pattern? | Same minimum, 100 pcs per colour either way. A new pattern only adds the sample round. |
| Can I mix sizes? | Yes, freely inside the 100 per colour. |
| Custom Pantone colour? | Yes. Each colour is dyed to your Pantone reference at the same 100 pcs per colour. |
| Can I mix colours to reach 100? | No. Each colour is its own dye lot, so each colour needs its own 100. |
| Logo on the garment? | A heat-transfer or woven-label logo adds no extra minimum. A custom jacquard waistband has its own elastic minimum (see the waistband table above). |
| Real production or relabelled stock? | Real cut-and-sew production. Your order is cut from fabric rolls tested for your order, not relabelled stock. |
| Custom packaging? | Plain poly bags and labels add no extra minimum. Printed bags, hang tags, 3-pack boxes and gift boxes start at 100 per design (see the packaging table above). |

Selected Modal Underwear Projects
Names are withheld at the clients’ request.
US DTC Startup: Women's Modal Briefs, 3-Pack Boxes
Their first underwear line, sold online and on Amazon. Modal briefs, 100 pieces per design, printed waistband logo, packed in their own 3-pack retail boxes. They had no box files, so we drew the dielines, sent a packed sample to approve, and applied the FBA barcodes and SKU stickers before shipping.
The test run sold through. They came back with more colours and a gift box.
European Lifestyle Label: Men's and Women's Basics
A mid-sized label adding modal basics for its stockists: men’s and women’s styles, printed poly bags and swing tags made alongside the garments. They wanted to hold and feel everything first, so we sent physical pre-production samples for fabric, fit and packaging. Every run since is matched back to the sample they approved.
The modal line is now part of their regular boutique range, and the reorders keep coming.
Australian Wellness Brand: Gift-Set Briefs
Gift sets, so the box mattered as much as the briefs. Soft modal briefs with a branded waistband, in magnetic gift boxes at 100 per design, boxes made alongside the garments. Before bulk we sent photos of the packed sample so they could check box fit, print alignment and where the sticker landed.
The sets went into their holiday campaign. They come back each season.
Why Brands Choose Renrui for Modal Underwear
Pre-Shrunk to ≤3%
We relax and compact the modal before it is cut. Your customer’s first wash should not change the size you signed off.
Roll-Level Wash Test
The ISO 6330 test runs on the roll your order is cut from, not on a showroom swatch. You get the numbers before bulk.
Honest Fibre Labelling
Generic lyocell is labelled lyocell and bamboo is labelled viscose from bamboo, so your product copy holds up to FTC rules.
100 pcs per Colour
Sizes split freely inside the 100. No size multiplier, no hidden per-size minimum.
Waistband Checked
We check elastic recovery after washing. The waistband is where modal underwear usually fails first, not the body fabric.
OEKO-TEX® Certified Fabrics
All four fabrics we run for modal underwear are certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. Copies of the certificate travel with every shipment.
Modal Underwear Manufacturer FAQ
100 pieces per colour, dyed to your Pantone reference, with sizes split freely within that quantity. Each colour is its own dye lot, so each colour carries its own 100.
At 300 pieces per colour, modal boxer briefs typically land around $2.80–$4.50 FOB. Where in that range depends on the fabric (micromodal costs more than modal), weight, pouch construction, waistband and packaging.
Send those details with your quantity per colour and we quote within 8–12 hours.
Only if the fabric uses Lenzing’s TENCEL™ fibre and your brand is approved through Lenzing’s licensing programme.
The lyocell we stock is generic lyocell, so it is labelled “lyocell” on care labels and product copy.
Anywhere from under 3% to nearly 19% in the first wash, and the finishing decides which. A 2025 study of 100% modal 1×1 rib (EN ISO 6330, 40 °C) measured 16.5–18.8% length shrinkage after one wash on fabric that was only dry-relaxed, and about 8% after wet relaxation.
We pre-shrink fabric to within 3% before cutting and send you the wash-test result for your own production roll before bulk.
We are the factory: 28,000 m² in Shuyang County, Suqian, Jiangsu, with 100+ workers, and our sales and brand office is in Suzhou. Renrui has been making garments since 2009. Cutting, sewing, printing and labelling are done in-house, and before you pay a deposit we’ll walk you round the production floor on a live video call.
92/8 modal/elastane for boxer briefs that need to stay in place, which is also the ratio we are asked for most often. 95/5 suits briefs and relaxed trunks. 91/9 to 90/10 gives a closer, more compressive fit for long-leg and sport styles.
7–10 days. The sample fee is credited against your bulk order in proportion to the bulk quantity.
25–35 days after sample approval and deposit. Reorders ship in 10–15 days off your held spec.
Air express (DHL, FedEx or UPS) takes about 5–8 working days door to door, which suits samples and small first orders. Sea freight takes about 18–25 days to the US West Coast and 30–40 days to the East Coast, port to port. With DDP we handle customs and duties and deliver to your warehouse; you get one landed price per piece.
Sample fees can be paid by PayPal or bank transfer, and the sample fee is credited against your bulk order in proportion to the bulk quantity. Bulk orders are paid by bank transfer (T/T): 30% deposit to start production, 70% after you approve the inspection report and before the goods ship.
Yes. Our modal, micromodal, lyocell and bamboo-viscose fabrics are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, and certificate copies travel with every shipment.
Yes. We label it “viscose from bamboo”, as US FTC rules require for bamboo-based rayon.
Yes. We sew three pouch constructions: a contour front, a 3D pouch panel and a separated U-pouch. On modal we cut pouch panels in low ply heights, use a shorter stretch stitch and line 3D and U-pouches with self fabric so they hold their shape after washing.
It can, mainly on the inner thigh and when it is tumble dried hot. Compact-spun micromodal at 170 gsm and up, a double-layer gusset and a “tumble dry low or hang dry” care label make the biggest difference. We can test your fabric to ISO 12945-2; a well-made micromodal jersey typically rates grade 3–4 after 2,000 rubs.
Yes. Stock elastic with a heat-transfer logo or a woven label has no extra minimum. A custom jacquard waistband needs about 1,000 m of elastic per design and colour and adds 10–15 days, so most brands switch to it on their first reorder.
Yes. Printed poly bags, hang tags, belly bands, 3-pack boxes and magnetic gift boxes all start at 100 per design, so they match the 100-piece garment minimum. Plain poly bags add no extra minimum. Packaging is printed while the bulk is sewn and the goods ship retail-ready.
Yes. Send the reference garment, or clear photos with measurements, and our pattern room drafts the block from it. The first sample takes 7–10 days and the sample fee is credited against your bulk order in proportion to the bulk quantity.
No. We’re a cut-and-sew factory. Seamless underwear is knitted on circular seamless machines, which we don’t have, and we’d rather tell you now than after you’ve sent a tech pack.
