What Private Label Clothing Manufacturing Actually Means
Most brands that come to us for private label manufacturing have already tried white label — and run straight into the problem: they’re selling the exact same garment as two or three of their competitors, in the same colorway, with only a different label sewn inside. We’ve had this conversation more times than we can count. A brand founder discovers that the “exclusive” product they’ve been marketing is listed on another brand’s website, same seam tape, same pocket placement, same silhouette. At that point, their only differentiator is marketing spend, and that’s a race no product brand can win sustainably.
Private label manufacturing, as we practice it, means something specific: the garment is built to your design specification — your fit, your fabric selection, your construction details — and carries your brand identity on the finished piece. We hold no intellectual property over your designs. The pattern, the tech pack, and the finished product belong to you. That’s the fundamental distinction between private label and white label apparel, and it’s why OEM private label is the only model that builds real brand equity over time.
Below is a breakdown of how our private label service actually works, what the process involves at each stage, and where the common friction points are — including the ones that most factory pages don’t mention.
Your Design Stays Yours — In Writing
The single biggest fear brands tell us about before working with any overseas factory: “what stops you from taking my design and selling it to someone else?” It’s a fair question, and most factory pages never answer it. Here is our answer — in mechanisms, not promises:
- We sign an NDA before you send anything. Tech packs, patterns, artwork — a mutual non-disclosure agreement is in place before you share a single file.
- A no-resale clause is written into every production agreement. Your design, pattern and samples are never shown to another buyer, listed in our catalog, or produced for anyone else — on the contract, not a verbal assurance.
- You own the pattern and tech pack outright. We hold no intellectual property over your designs. If you ever move production elsewhere, the pattern and spec leave with you.
This is the structural reason private label beats white label: white label can’t offer exclusivity, because the garment is built to be sold to many brands. Private label, done properly, is exclusive by contract — and we put that contract in front of you before production, not after.
Our Private Label Service: From Design to Branded Garment
We run private label programs end-to-end: from design and tech pack development through fabric sourcing, sample production, label manufacturing, bulk production, and quality control. Here’s how each stage works in practice.
Private Label vs. White Label: Why It Matters for Brand Equity
We get asked this comparison question regularly, and we think it’s worth being direct about it. White label is not inherently bad — for rapid testing, proof-of-concept, or very early-stage market validation, it has a role. But white label cannot build a brand, because the product is not yours. The same garment with another label is your competitor’s product. Here’s how the two models compare across the dimensions that matter most for clothing line development.
| Dimension | Private Label | White Label |
|---|---|---|
| Design ownership | Yours exclusively — you own the pattern and IP | Factory retains design ownership; you license the label |
| Exclusivity | Your garment is not sold to any other brand | Same garment available to any buyer under a different label |
| MOQ | 200 pcs/colorway (woven labels); 100 pcs for screen-print | Often lower — sometimes as low as 1 unit for stock items |
| Time to market | Longer — sampling and label production add 5–8 weeks | Faster — stock product, label application only |
| Brand equity impact | High — product differentiation is real and defensible | None — differentiation exists only in marketing, not product |
Our honest position: if you are at the stage where you’re testing a product idea in a new category and genuinely unsure whether there’s a market, white label apparel is a legitimate tool. But if you’re building a brand — something with a name, a community, and repeat customers — the economics of white label collapse the moment a competitor finds the same supplier. Branded garments built on custom private label manufacturing hold their position because the product itself cannot be copied by swapping a label.
What Garment Types Are Available for Private Label?
We run private label programs across a broad range of categories. MOQ varies by construction complexity — simpler jersey programs can run at lower quantities because pattern setup is faster; complex cut-and-sew and outerwear require more upfront tooling and carry higher minimums.
Indicative Private Label Pricing by Category
FOB unit costs from current production. The number moves with fabric weight, decoration, and labeling. Woven shirts and outerwear we quote case by case, usually from 100 pieces.
| Category | Small Batch (100 pcs/color, FOB) | Sample | Bulk (500+ pcs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-Shirts & Jersey Knits | $1.80–$3.00 | $8.50–$15 | $0.80–$1.40 |
| Tank Tops | $1.50–$2.30 | $6.50–$10.50 | $0.60–$1.10 |
| Crewneck Sweatshirts | $3.80–$5.50 | $11.50–$18.50 | $2.70–$3.50 |
| Hoodies | $4.80–$6.50 | $11.50–$20 | $2.60–$3.50 |
| Leggings / Activewear* | $4.80–$7.00 | $16–$23 | $3.00–$4.40 |
| Loungewear / Pajama Sets | $4.00–$7.00 | — | $2.30–$4.00 |
*Activewear (leggings, sports bras, compression) starts at 100 pcs/colorway. Woven shirts and outerwear are quoted per spec. All figures are indicative FOB ranges, not binding quotes.
Tariffs & True Landed Cost to the US (2026)
If you’re sourcing a collection from China in 2026, tariffs are the first thing on your mind — and the number most factory pages quietly leave out of their “landed cost.” We won’t. US import duty on apparel is a base MFN rate (around 12% on most cotton knits, HS 6110) plus whatever Section 301 tariff is in effect the day your goods clear customs. That second number moves, so printing a fixed percentage here would only mislead you.
- We quote the exact combined duty rate in writing, per category, as of your production date — a real number for each SKU in your line, not a blanket estimate.
- Duty shown as its own line — FOB, freight and tariff broken out, so you can model margin across the whole collection and check it against your own customs broker.
- DDP available — delivered, duties paid, to your US or EU door. One all-in landed number for the container, you never touch customs. Ask for it in your inquiry.
Even with tariffs in, cut-and-sew private label at 100+ units per style still typically beats buying white-label blanks and relabeling them — and unlike a blank, the landed garment is exclusively yours. Run your own number on today’s rate; that’s exactly why we quote it in writing instead of burying it.

European Startup Loungewear Label — Small-Batch Private Label
A new European loungewear brand wanted several styles and colours up at once to see what stuck, but the usual factory minimums were too high for where they were. We ran home polos, loungewear sets, and knit tanks from 100 a style, designed the woven label and hangtag for them, and used in-stock GRS fabric we could dye straight to colour. Samples in 7 days, bulk in 28, and we packed the styles into one container. Their own logo embroidery and labels throughout, on OEKO-TEX-compliant cloth.
Outcome: They launched eight SKUs at once: three tanks, four home polos, a long-sleeve set. Two tanks took off and reorder regularly, and it’s grown into ongoing small-batch restocking.
Our Terms, In Writing
Most factories make you email three times to learn their MOQ. Here is everything, up front.
| Term | What we commit to |
|---|---|
| MOQ | 100 pieces per colour / design on fabric dyed to your colour — each colour needs its own dye run, so each colour carries its own 100. Sizes are mixed freely within those 100: no size multiplier. (Two exceptions, stated honestly: custom woven labels need 100 pcs per colorway because label looms carry fixed setup costs; activewear starts at 100 pcs per colorway.) |
| Pricing | From $1.80/pc FOB. Indicative ranges by category are published above — the number moves with fabric weight, decoration, colourway count and packaging. Send us your style and target quantity and we quote every tier (100 / 300 / 500 / 1,000) in one email, so you can see exactly what scaling saves you before committing. |
| Sampling | Sample fee applies per style, itemized on your quote. |
| Bulk production | 4–6 weeks after sample approval, including fabric sourcing. |
| Reorders | 10–15 days. This is where working with the actual factory pays off. |
| Payment | 30% deposit, 70% before shipment. |
| Shipping | FOB Shanghai or Ningbo, or DDP door-to-door. We quote both, so you can compare true landed cost — not just the factory-gate price. Our factory is in Suzhou, Jiangsu; both ports are within a short inland haul. |
| Certifications | OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and GRS 4.0. Certificates and our business licence sent on request. |

Private Label Clothing Manufacturing FAQ
Private label clothing manufacturing means a garment is produced to your exact brand
specification — your design, your fit, your materials — and carries your brand identity
on the finished product. This is distinct from white label apparel, where a factory
produces a pre-made design that multiple brands can purchase and relabel. The critical
difference is IP control: in private label, the design is yours exclusively; in white label,
the factory retains ownership of the design and can sell the same garment to any number
of brands simultaneously.
Our position on this is clear: for any brand serious about building equity,
private label is the only path that creates defensible product differentiation.
White label has its place in early-stage market testing, but it is not a foundation
you can build a brand on.
Our minimum for woven main labels — the standard label type for branded apparel — is
100 pieces per colorway. Screen-printed neck labels, more common in activewear and
streetwear, are available from 100 pieces.
The 200-piece threshold for woven labels is not arbitrary. Label looms carry fixed
setup costs: programming the loom, threading the yarn, and running the first production
meter is expensive regardless of final quantity. Below 100 pieces, that fixed cost
makes the per-unit label price unworkable for most brands. We won’t quote around this —
it’s an honest constraint of how woven label production works.
First sample: 7–10 business days after design confirmation and fabric selection.
Bulk production: 4–6 weeks after sample approval. Those are the numbers most brands
plan around — and they’re accurate.
The caveat most brands don’t account for: label approval. Getting your woven label
artwork finalized, approved by the label mill, produced, and delivered typically
adds 1–2 weeks that brands routinely don’t budget for in their launch timeline.
If you’re working toward a specific launch date, start the label artwork process
in parallel with — not after — the sampling round. This single scheduling decision
is the difference between hitting a launch window and missing it by two weeks.
Yes, always. We manufacture to your brand specification — your label artwork is
applied as you provide it. We do not impose template designs or default branding
at any stage of production.
For woven labels, provide artwork as vector AI or EPS files with clearly defined
thread color callouts using Pantone references. One practical tip from our label
team: avoid fine text in woven labels below 6pt. At that size, the loom cannot
reproduce thin strokes accurately — letters can merge or break, particularly in
fine serif fonts. If your brand mark relies on small detailed text, we can advise
on thread count and weave adjustments before you commit to production.
White label means the factory produces a single garment design and sells it to
multiple brands, each applying their own label to the same underlying product.
Private label means the garment is custom-designed — or at minimum custom-specified
in fit, construction, and material — exclusively for your brand. The same base
garment does not go to your competitors.
This distinction matters far more than most early-stage brands realize. If you’re
building on white label, your product differentiation lives entirely in your
marketing, because the physical product is identical to what others are selling
under different brand names. For long-term brand equity, private label is the
only viable path. White label can be appropriate for rapid market testing, but
it is not a foundation to build on — and the brands that try to treat it as one
consistently hit the same wall: a competitor finds the same supplier and undercuts
them on price, because the product gives no other competitive ground to stand on.
